A Delegation from Central South University, Changsha China and University of the Punjab, Lahore visits Department of City & Regional Planning, University of Engineering & Technology, Lahore on September 24, 2024

 

 

A joint delegation from Central South University, Changsha China and University of the Punjab Lahore visited Department of City and Regional Planning, University of Engineering and Technology (UET) Lahore on September 24, 2024. The Central South University China and Department of Space Sciences, University of the Punjab are working on a joint project entitled, Disaster Response System for Belt and Road (DRS4BR). The project is intended to develop a Satellite Emergency-Response System for Typical Major Natural Hazards along One Belt and One Road (OBOR) project.

The delegation included Professor Dr. Wu Lixin, Associate Professor Dr. Zelang Miao, Associate Professor Dr. Biyan Chen and Associate Prof Dr. Wenfei Mao along with three PhD scholars Ms. Rabia Rasheed, Mr. Huayan Dai and Mr. Yaopeng Xiong from Central South University. The delegation also included Professor Dr. Syed Amer Mahmood, Head of Space Sciences Department, University of the Punjab along with Dr. Jahanzeb Qureshi, Dr. Saira Batool, and Dr. Amer Masood Chishti from Punjab University Lahore.

On behalf of the Worthy Vice Chancellor University of Engineering & Technology Lahore, Professor Dr. Shahid Munir, the Chairman Department of City & Regional Planning Professor Dr. Shaker Mahmood Mayo warmly welcomed the Chinese delegates at 2:00 pm at the Department of City and Regional Planning, UET Lahore. The project Team Leader Professor Dr. Wu Lixin was highly delighted to see Chinese Language Text on the front entrance wall of the department and vowed his personal liking for Pakistan and the long-lived China-Pakistan friendship.

In the honor of the visiting delegation from the collaborating universities of China and Pakistan and Pakistan a joint seminar was arranged to expose the objectives of the DRS4BR project to the students and faculty at the Department of City and Regional Planning, University of Engineering & Technology, Lahore. Professor Dr. Shaker Mahmood Mayo formally welcomed the esteemed guests from Central South University and Punjab University and deeply thanked Professor Dr. Syed Amer Mahmood for involving UET Lahore in the DRS4BR project. As the keynote speaker, the Project Team Leader Professor Dr. Wu Lixin delivered a detailed lecture on the project and explained implication of the project for effective disaster response system particularly along OBOR initiative and for Pakistan in general. Professor Wu Lixin took a keen interest in the master’s program in Disaster Management and City & Regional Planning, offered at the department and desired to have formal Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the two institutions under the DRS4BR project. Afterwards, university mementoes were given to all the honorable delegates from China and Pakistan.

On the conclusion, there was a consensus within all the participating institutions to ink an MoU between Central South University, China and City & Regional Planning Department, UET Lahore to collaborate in collaborative research, joint projects, and students and faculty exchange between the two institutions. Moreover, as Pakistan stands amongst the top ten climate induced disaster risk countries in the world, there is a need to collaborate in climate induced risks especially the flash flooding, urban flooding, and smog havoc in Lahore and major urban centers. China being the best example in the world who transformed its industrial processes with clean and green initiatives can also support and collaborate for making our cities and economic infrastructures, cleaner, healthier, and disaster resilient.
